Prep the dish
- Preheat the oven to 350°F and grease a 9x13 baking dish. Make sure the surface is evenly greased so the casserole releases cleanly.
Layer the filling and rolls
- Spread the apple pie filling in an even layer across the bottom of the dish. Sprinkle the cinnamon and nutmeg over the apples for a spiced base.
- Open the cinnamon roll cans and cut or pull apart each roll into quarters. This helps the pieces scatter evenly and bake into golden, cooked-through layers.
- Scatter the cinnamon roll pieces over the apple filling, covering the top as evenly as possible. Aim for full coverage so the apple layer bubbles through at the edges.
Bake and finish
- Bake for 25–30 minutes at 350°F until the rolls are golden and cooked through. Look for a golden top and bubbling apple filling around the edges.
- Drizzle the reserved icing over the warm bake and serve immediately. Letting it sit briefly will keep the icing glossy while still warm.
Notes
Pro tip: spread the apple pie filling in a thin, even layer so the cinnamon roll pieces bake uniformly and the edges bubble instead of steaming. Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days; reheat in the oven or microwave until warmed through. Freezing is not recommended because the cinnamon roll texture can turn soft after thawing. For a lighter swap, use reduced-sugar apple pie filling if available while keeping baking time the same.
