Firecracker Hot Dogs

Firecracker hot dogs are grilled hot dogs spiral-scored so they char and split open, then loaded with spicy jalapeño relish, bright yellow mustard, and a sriracha drizzle. They’re fast, bold, and ideal for a 4th of July hot dog party with toasted buns and crunchy fried onions.

Ingredients

Hot dogs and buns
  • 8 beef hot dogs
  • 8 hot dog buns
  • 2 tbsp butter Soften for easy spreading.
Toppings and sauce
  • 0.5 cup jalapeño relish or pickled jalapeños Chop if using whole pickled jalapeños.
  • 0.25 cup yellow mustard
  • 2 tbsp sriracha
  • 0.25 cup crispy fried onions
  • 1 ketchup for serving Serve on the side.

Equipment

  • 1 grill

Method

Score and grill the hot dogs
  1. Score each hot dog with diagonal cuts or a spiral cut to help them char and open on the grill. This creates more surface area for grilling and keeps the filling-ready shape as it cooks.
  2. Preheat the grill or grill pan to medium-high heat and cook hot dogs for 8–10 minutes, turning frequently, until charred and split open slightly. Look for dark grill marks and visible split openings along the score lines.
Toast the buns
  1. Butter the inside of each bun and toast on the grill for 1–2 minutes until golden. Remove when the cut sides are lightly browned and crisp at the edges.
Assemble the firecracker hot dogs
  1. Place a hot dog in each toasted bun and top with jalapeño relish. Add a squeeze of yellow mustard over the relish for bright, tangy coverage.
  2. Finish each hot dog with a drizzle of sriracha, then sprinkle crispy fried onions on top. Serve immediately with ketchup on the side.

Notes

For the best char and split, keep the grill at medium-high and turn often during the 8–10 minutes so the scored seams open evenly. Store leftover grilled components in the fridge up to 3 days; assemble right before eating for the crunch. Freezing cooked hot dogs is possible but the buns and fried onions won’t stay crisp. If you want it milder, use jalapeño relish labeled less spicy or replace with sweet relish and reduce the sriracha to 1 tbsp.
